Quick & Easy SEABOARD SYSTEM COVERED HOPPERS
Here's my 'Quick & Easy' way to a fleet of SBD covered hoppers. The new SBD covered hoppers decals from S&R Models are available. These decals are for SBD Beige covered hoppers. The decals are available in several road number ranges, to cover different types of covered hoppers. I chose to make some ACF centerflow hoppers first, So I had road numbers to fit the IM 3-bay ACF hopper.
I started with Intermountain CSX beige covered hoppers. The CSX logo and road numbers came off easily with an eraser, including the ends. After the CSX lettering was removed, I sprayed the model with Glosscoat and let dry a full day. Then the model was ready for decals. Since I used the beige CSX model, I only needed to use the SBD logo and reporting marks/number from the decal sheet. I just kept the other misc data that was printed on the model.
Another version of the above was made, except that I left the Intermountain CSX road number on the car (same car number series as SBD) and just added the SBD reporting marks. These Provided an interesting variation and mix of models.
Quick & Easy SBD additions.
Next, I will paint some Bower.D.V. Airslides and IM 3-bay PS hoppers for SBD models.
I'l have to check on the M-T Evans model to see how I can use that style to represent some SBD hoppers, as well as checking the Walthers, Athearn and Atlas PS 3-bay covered hoppers for use.
